The talk provides a personal view from a friend and a colleague. Grahame knew George Daniels for more than 40 years and the talk will cover many of George’s achievements and give an insight in to his passion for vintage cars and other interests.

‘The Forgotten History of George W Rickett’ – Graham Dolan

Rickett worked at the Royal Observatory from 1918 until the 1960s. At the start of WW2, he took charge of the chronometer work when it was evacuated to Bristol and then Bradford on Avon. His small team kept the armed forces supplied with properly tested and rated chronometers and watches, issuing some 21,023 instruments in the last year of the war alone. In 1948 the Chronometer Department moved to Herstmonceux. and Rickett remained its head until 1964. Graham Dolan is one of the country’s leading authorities on the history of the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, where he worked for many years as its Senior Education Officer. He is a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and his Royal Observatory website (www.RoyalObservatoryGreenwich.org) is widely consulted.

‘Clocks in Urban Infrastructure’ – David Rooney

David Rooney is Keeper of Technologies and Engineering at the Science Museum, London. There is a huge network of clocks hidden from view which help cities operate and David will be talking about the clocks embedded into urban systems, from street lighting and fire alarm networks to traffic signals and taxicabs, as well as underpinning modern technologies as diverse as satellite navigation and financial trading.

‘British Jerome – the untold story’ – Peter Gosnell

Peter has extensively researched the American clock trade with the UK in the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century and its influence on UK clockmaking. In this talk, he presents research he has undertaken in to British Jerome which imported American clocks; made such clocks in the UK; and even tried re-exporting them to the USA.

‘Breguet 111 and other Breguet clocks at the British Museum’ – Oliver Cooke

Oli is a Curator of Horology at the British Museum. He has been researching Breguet 111 and the other three wheeled clocks by Breguet and presents his findings along with other Breguet clocks from the collection.
